about Koratoras

koratoras is an artist based In Aotearoa, New Zealand, whose work is built through layering and shaped through reduction. Grounded in whakapapa, the work moves through material memory and form where each piece carries its own lineage.

With over two decades as a Scenic artist working alongside leading directors and art departments his practice shifted into a focused, independent exploration of image making.

Working with  acrylic paint, resin and mixed media Koratoras  builds layered surfaces that hold both weight and luminosity. The work draws from natural systems- forests celestial movement and elemental forces- while remaining grounded in abstraction.

Recent works extend into resin and  paper based constructions, where torn, stacked and compressed materials form sculptural compositions. These works explore accumulation, memory and encoded histories -positioning material itself as a form of data.

Each work is built through layering and shaped through ruthless editing-until the work resolves. The work does not seek to explain, but to hold space- for stillness, intensity and connection.
